Doha: The Foreign Minister H E Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah yesterday visited the second Mal Lawal Biennale which continues at Doha Exhibition Center until February-end.
The visit comes in appreciation of Qatar Museums (QM) for promoting arts, linking members of society to their history and deepening ties among GCC states as the exhibition features private collections from Qatar and some GCC countries.
Dr Al Attiyah toured the expo, accompanied by QM’s Acting CEO Mansour bin Ibrahim Al Mahmoud and other officials.
Mal Lawal (meaning ‘From the Old Days’ in Qatari dialect) is showcasing about 4,000 artefacts collected by over 110 Qatari private collectors and 42 from the GCC region.
Organised into nine categories, the expo features manuscripts, weapons, Islamic collections, old maps, ethnographic and heritage items, antiquities, jewellery, clothing, accessories and other rare items.
Spread over an 8,000sqm space, Mal Lawal also features new elements such as majilises, live video links on eight “home museums” and their private collections, more than 100 “oral histories” captured in mini-films, a food court serving traditional Qatari dishes and a children’s area with a movable cinema installation.
