YORK, United Kingdom--The Church of England ended centuries of male-only leadership on Monday as Libby Lane became its first female bishop at a ceremony in York cathedral despite fierce opposition from traditionalists.

The historic service in northern England comes six months after the Church voted to allow women to take its top jobs for the first time since its foundation by king Henry VIII in 1534.
