DOHA: The Ministry of Environment is expected to bring out a ‘specifications standard’ for the construction sector soon, which also includes a ‘green code’ for new buildings.
The ‘specifications’ would be applicable to all new buildings and structures, an Arabic daily reported.
Proposed regulations will ensure materials being used for construction match the country’s quality standards.
The Green Building Code aims at reducing energy and water consumption. As per international standards, buildings with ‘green codes’ can reduce energy consumption up to 30 percent and make significant reductions in water usage. Stringent air filtering and limit on common cleaning products are among other mandatory requirements covered by the code.
A top official at the ministry said new regulations will help promote eco-friendly products in the construction industry. The ministry also plans to set up a research centre to support green initiatives Qatar is planning to launch.
