3km stretch of Al Wakra Beach to be cleaned up today

Doha: A large number of Qatari entities have supported the third regional campaign, Waste Free Environment (WFE), initiated by Gulf Petrochemical and Chemicals Association (GPCA). 
The pan-GCC campaign raises awareness about the need to preserve the environment, reduce irresponsible disposal of waste and aims to tackle challenges associated with plastic litter. 
Clean-up events will be held today at 18 locations in 13 cities across in the GCC, Europe and India. 
Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco), a founding member of GPCA, is again the local liaison of the campaign in Qatar. A a 3km stretch of Al Wakra Beach will be cleaned up from 9am to 11:30am. 
Many schools have confirmed participation and many educational institutions are expected to take part. 
The general public is also invited. 
Sustainability workshops, waste management lectures and green competitions will be held on site as well as in universities, colleges and schools. 
“As an industry involved with the production of plastic, that is often erroneously blamed for environmental problems, we feel it is essential to educate and engage with different groups on issues surrounding improper waste disposal,” said Dr Abdulwahab Al Sadoun, Secretary-General, GPCA.
Qatar Petroleum, Al Wakra Municipality, the Ministry of Environment — Green Qatar & Environmental Awareness Division, the Ministry of Interior – South Police, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Friends of the Environment Centre, Qatar Sport and Environment Committee and Al Wakra Hospital have joined the initiative and Kahramaa, Amwaj, ExxonMobil, Qatar University, Texas A&M University at Qatar, College of the North Atlantic-Qatar, Education Above All and Community College of Qatar have backed it. 
Mesaieed Industrial City’s other main downstream entities such as Qatar Fertiliser Company, Qatar Fuel Additives Company, Qatar Vinyl Company, Qatar Plastic Products Company, Qatar Industrial Manufacturing Company, Qatofin Company Limited, and Qatar Chemical and Petrochemical Marketing and Distribution Company will also play a role in the campaign.
