DOHA: A research suggests that Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) should take steps to enhance risk management in its hospitals. The risk management corporate committee at HMC should create a risk assessment team to conduct a proactive risk assessment for patient safety, according to the study.
A proactive risk assessment at a healthcare facility would help understand what could happen, how it could be prevented and try to identify contributing factors before any accident happens.
“After excessive research of proactive risk assessment it was found that very few tools were used at HMC,” says the research conducted by Dr Moza Al Ishaq and Dr Jameela Alkhowaiter on ‘Using a Proactive Risk Assessment at Hamad Medical Corporation.’
It was discussed at the Annual Research Day held recently at the Hamad Medical City, where many oral and poster presentations were given, providing an opportunity for interactive discussions among local and international researchers and experts.
The risk management corporate committee is responsible to determine a schedule for reassessment of identified risk to verify whether risk reduction strategies were implemented and are being followed.
HMC should use more risk assessment tools to help improve patient safety, according to the research.
“The goal is to evaluate the proactive risk assessment tools to reduce the impact of incidents or other negative experiences that have the risk of causing injury, accident or other loss to the patient, visitors or staff,” the research suggests.
“Its important to know that there is a little evidence showing the effect of using proactive risk assessment in the health care organisations.
“There were also no studies conducted to address which tool can be sued for improving and enhancing patient safety,” the study adds.
HMC has achieved a significant increase in research over the last seven years since the introduction of Qatar National Research Fund.
It was granted over QR45m for 13 research proposals last year.
HMC receives QR50m as internal funding for research from the Supreme Council of Health.
