UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland called for the necessity of ending the occupation in the Palestinian territories and progressing towards a two-state solution in line with UN resolution and international law.

In the UN Security Council Briefing on the Situation in the Middle East, Wennesland urged maintaining calm in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, warning of increased Israeli attacks in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The UN official called on the occupation authorities to investigate the killing and targeting of Palestinian children, and also called for a transparent investigation and accountability for those involved in the tension in the occupied city of Jerusalem in recent days, stressing that the desecration of holy sites is unacceptable.

He pointed out that the violence and the escalating violence and tensions during the past month reaffirmed that efforts to manage the conflict were no substitute for real progress towards resolving it.

With regard to the Gaza Strip, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process said that the security and humanitarian situation inside Gaza is severe, and they suffer from very poor conditions.

The Palestinian territories, especially Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem, witnessed a recent escalation by Israeli occupation forces and settlers, who continue to storm the mosque and attack worshipers.
