Doha: Defending champion Thorsten Hohmann crashed out of the 2014 World 9-ball Championship (W9BC) losing to Dutchman Marc Teutscher in one of the several upsets witnessed here at Al Sadd Indoor Stadium yesterday.
The German started off a brilliant note taking the lead but Teutscher bounced back to win 11-6.
Teutscher overhauled the world number one to set up a clash with China’s Li He Wen.
In the other major upset of the day, Qatar’s Waleed Majed stunned world number four Lee Van Corteza 11-6 to advance to the round of 32.
The 26-year-old thus became the first-ever Qatar player to make it to the round of 32 at the $200,000 World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) sanctioned event.
Majed will take on Darren Appleton in the next match.
The rising star from Qatar beat Detlef Grzella of South Africa 9-2 in the first match and then followed it up with a 9-6 win over world number 28 Fabio Petroni of Italy in the round of 128 group matches.
The Englishman winner here in 2012 beat compatriot and another former champion Daryl Peach 11-3 to advance.
Qatar had more good result to cheer about.
Last year’s runner-up Antonio Gabica of the Philippines, assistant coach at Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation (QBSF)defeated Iran’s Medhi Rasekhi 11-7 to advance.
Gabica will next play Korea’s Ryu Seung Woo, who beat Italy Bruno Muratore 11-9.
Other major losers yesterday were two former winners, Dennis Ocollo of the Philippines and Mika Immonen.
Ocollo went down to Naoyuki Oi of Japan, while Mika Immonen of Finland lost to Roman Hybler of the Czech Republic.
The winner of the championship will get $30,000 and the runner-up $15,000.
The semi-finals and the final will be held on Friday.
