Emir sends greetings to Uruguay president

Doha: The Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday sent a cable of congratulations to the President of the Republic of Uruguay José Mujica on the occasion of his country's National Day.

The Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani also sent a  similar cable to the president of Uruguay.

Uruguay declared its independence from the Empire of Brazil on August 25, 1825, following a four-way struggle amongst Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Brazil.

Home to 3.3 million people, of whom 1.8 million live in the capital Montevideo, Uruguay is the second-smallest nation in South America by area, after Suriname.
