Yemen faces human rights crisis: Amnesty

DUBAI: Amnesty International warned yesterday that Yemen could face a new human rights crisis, calling on the government to end “persistent” abuses and address past violations.

“Yemen could face another human rights crisis unless the authorities act now to end persistent abuses in the country and take steps to address past violations” the watchdog said in a statement.

“The Yemeni authorities must define and implement a clear human rights agenda,” Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa Programme Director Philip Luther said.

He called on the authorities “to set up a commission of inquiry into human rights violations during the events of 2011,” where a popular uprising that eventually ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh was met with force.

Amnesty cited the “immunity granted to Saleh and his former officials earlier this year” as a contributor to the “climate of impunity” for continuing human rights abuses.
