Students at the environment-friendly state-of-the-art faciltiy.
DOHA: A new environment- friendly Student Housing complex has opened its doors to students of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) and its partner universities.
Students are now living in the complex, and many resumed classes in the past few weeks.
The on campus student housing in Education City is one of many state-of-the-art facilities offered to all students admitted to HBKU, or one of its partner universities, or the Academic Bridge Program (ABP).
HBKU Housing and Residential Life has been awarded a LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) Platinum Certificate, the highest standard available for sustainable buildings.
About 12.5 percent of power used in residences is from renewable energy sources, such as the iconic wind turbines at the main entrance of the complex, in addition to multiple solar panels and water powered fixtures on site.
Dr Khalid Al Khanji, Vice President of Student Affairs at HBKU, said: “The opening of the complex complements the academic mission of HBKU to support student learning outside the classroom and create a green living environment of high standards.
“This will also strengthen the HBKU’s commitment to sustainable development and protection of the environment, one of the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030.”
The Student Housing consists of single-gendered buildings, with a co-education community centre which includes a computer lab, study rooms, food venues, and programming space.
It has 1,200 beds, 600 of which are occupied by undergraduate and graduate students.
First year residents are offered a single room and encouraged to take advantage of the dining facilities at Al Majlis Al Shamali community centre.
Returning students are given options, from single occupation studios to shared apartments with full kitchens.
All rooms within the complex are meant for single occupancy, complete with modular furniture and encourage students to personalise their rooms.
The Student Housing is monitored by security 24 hours.
The complex brings together students from over 60 countries living and learning on HBKU’s dynamic campus.
It also provides an ideal opportunity for students to live closer to the university, learn fundamental life skills, and balance personal interests and academic and family obligations. The Peninsula
