Largest Qatari flag set to enter Guinness

Doha: Qatar is vying to enter the Guinness World Records by coming up with the largest national flag in the world.

A campaign was launched yesterday at Katara which will see Qatar prepare the largest flag in the world on the occasion of its National Day.

Speaking at the launch of the campaign during a press conference, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Sulaiti, General Manager of Katara, said the patriotic initiative aims to show the people’s loyalty and belongingness towards Qatar.

“We feel proud to see our flag and when people decorate our capital city with it. The flag carries the love of the people and the leadership. 

“Marking this day on the occasion on the National Day, which is a milestone in our glorious history, will reinforce our national identity.”

Katara will support and sponsor the campaign titled ‘Fidelity/ devotion and loyalty flag’ as part of its new five-year strategy which aims at promoting Qatari national identity and heritage.

Maqim Al Hajiri, the Executive Director of the campaign, said the aim was not just to register with the Guinness World Records.

“Our ambition goes beyond registering with the Guinness. We want to show cohesion and unity among the people and the leadership of Qatar. 

“The flag shows our loyalty to the land.”

Talal Omer, who heads the Middle East office of the Guinness World Records, said he was excited to see this historical event take place in Qatar. “We have criteria and international standards based on which we select winners who are then registered in the encyclopedia.” The Peninsula
