Doha: Ooredoo is set to be one of key sponsors of the Women Leaders Forum in New York this week.

As an official side event of the United Nations General Assembly session, the forum will bring together leaders from the public and private sectors to address global challenges facing women in the world.

The forum will address the issue ‘’Connecting Women’s Health and Girl’s Education for Scalable and Sustainable Development,” with experts from the fields of healthcare, education and social policy.

Ooredoo has been a pioneer in supporting healthcare and education initiatives in Qatar, building the network that has supported the rapid expansion of schools and hospitals across the country.

The company has sponsored a range of initiatives in Qatar to empower women.

In supporting the forum, Ooredoo is looking to connect with global leaders, and promote some of the remarkable steps being taken by organisations in Qatar to sustain female leadership.

Through its presence in developing markets, Ooredoo has put emphasis on social and economic developments in its operations, particularly since the launch of its new brand this February.

In Iraq, Asiacell created the Almas (‘diamond’ in Arabic) line to enable women to be better connected to friends and family.

It also welcomed more than 1.8 million female customers in less than two years.

The proportion of female customers in Asiacell’s customer base grew from 20 percent to 40 percent since Almas was introduced in April 2011.

The forum will include panellists such as Dr Madame Christine Kaseba-Sata, First Lady of Zambia; Patience Goodluck, First Lady of Nigeria; and Oscar winning actress Geena Davis, Founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.
