Doha: German pair of Baldewein Dustin and Wagner Jan-Jasper took an early lead in the men’s section while the French team dominated in the women’s of the 47th Military Sailing Championship here yesterday.
In near-perfect conditions for sailing, the Germans have a net score of three at the end of three races, held on the first day of the championship.
Closely following the leader were the Ukraine team comprising of Pavlo Matsuyer and Borys Shvets with six points.
The Indian pair of Posmarajan Pandian Mottu and Norender Singh Rajput is in third place.
Hosts Qatar lead by Jassim Al Sulaiti and Waleed Al Shashani are in fifth place with a net score of 20, behind Finland who have a score of 17.
The six-day championship is contested by 100 sailors from 17 countries.
Sailors from Canada, Sri Lanka, Germany, Pakistan, Denmark, France, Norway, Poland, Ukraine, Finland, Tunisia, India, Turkey, the USA, Indonesia and Qatar are competing in the men’s section.
In the women’s section, France one of the seven countries taking part dominated on day one to have a net score of five points.
Sophie De Turckheim and Camille Lecointre lead over second placed Ukraine team of Anna Kyselova and Anastastsiya Krasko, who are four points behind the leaders.
The Russian team of Alisa Kiriliuk and Liudmila Dmitrieva are in third place with one point separating them from the second position.
Poland are in the fourth place followed by Germany, USA and Indonesia.
Today three races will take place. Thursday will be a rest day. The final three races will be held on Friday.
