Amman: Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Chairman Dr Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri yesterday called for establishing an Arab human rights court like the regional ones in Europe, the Americas and Africa.

Al Marri said this could be achieved through the adoption of an additional protocol to the Arab Charter on Human Rights as well as expanding the powers and functions of the Arab League’s Permanent Arab Commission for Human Rights to address the human rights situation in the Arab region.

The NHRC chairman made the remarks as he participated in a workshop organised in Amman for Arab diplomats by the Doha-based UN Human Rights Training Documentation Centre for South West Asia and the Arab Region, in collaboration with Jordan’s National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR), which will continue till December 27.

During the 7th session of the workshop yesterday, Al Marri gave a speech on the Arab Charter on Human Rights and chaired the 8th meeting of the working group on the role of diplomacy in developing the charter.

He gave an analysis of the Arab League’s mechanisms and instruments on human rights along with proposals to improve and activate them.

He also reflected on the process leading to the establishment of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights in 1968, when the UN, on the 20th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, called on regional organisations to establish human rights committees.QNA
