Qatar Academy students set records

A total of 100 Grade 11 and 12 students were recognised for their excellent academic performance for the first term of the current school year by Qatar Academy. In a gathering called by Assistant Principal and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Coordinator Sarah McGinley as a ‘celebration assembly’, 80 students received honours certificate while 20 students were awarded the high honours accolade.

Addressing the students, McGinley said: “The whole point of this assembly is to congratulate you for two reasons. The first reason is for the impressive number of students in honours and high honours list. The second and even bigger reason is the unprecedented number of people achieving a GPA of 4 or higher”.

For the first time in the history of the academy, two students received a perfect GPA of 7. Graduating students Oswin Rodrigues and Rana Abu Al Saud received Excellent rating for the first term and are on track for a high performing academic year.

“This proves that a vast majority of our students come to school on time, attend their classes and do their work accordingly,” McGinley said. “To put into perspective achievements of our grade 12 students, we can take into consideration the number of interviews they’ve had from universities around the world, Columbia [University in New York] and Imperial [College London] for instance”.

Science teacher and grade manager Steven Barrett said: “It would be fairly conclusive from these numbers that we are succeeding in our mission statement and the teachers are using a range of strategies to facilitate the learning of QA students.

“It would also be worth congratulating not only those students who are obtaining high honours or honours but all students who are achieving a passing GPA whilst undertaking such a rigorous programme”.
