Qatar-US ties discussed in Emir’s meetings

WASHINGTON: Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met senior US officials at his residence here and at the Capitol yesterday.
Among those who met the Emir was newly-appointed US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter. The Emir congratulated Carter on assuming his job and wished him success in his duties. The two reviewed areas of cooperation, particularly in the military sphere, and discussed regional and international issues, especially developments in the region.
The Emir also met US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew at his residence.
Discussions during the meetings dealt with relations between Qatar and the United States and prospetcts for developing them, as well as a number of issues of common interest.
At the Capitol, the seat of the US Congress, the Emir had a meeting with the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, John Boehner, and several members of the US Senate
The Emir also met the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator John McCain, Intelligence Committee Chairman Senator Richard Barr, the Deputy Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, Senator Jack Reed, and the Vice Chairman of the Intelligence Committee, Senator Dianne Feinstein.
The Emir later met the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, Robert Menendez, and members of the Committee.
Relations between the two countries, prospects for increasing cooperation and the latest developments in the Middle East were discussed during the meetings.
The Emir also attended a reception hosted by members of the Society of Qatar Friends at the Congress (the American-Qatari Caucus), at the Congress premises.
Talks during the reception dealt with topics of mutual interest, especially regarding consolidation of cooperation and friendship between the two countries.
The Emir expressed thanks and appreciation for the warm reception, praising the excellent relations between Qatar and the US, and said bilateral relations in various fields, particularly investment, will be further strengthened.
Views on regional and international issues of mutual interest were also exchanged.
The members of the Society praised the strong relations between the two countries and said the Emir’s visit would boost communication and coordination between the two countries and strengthen their strategic partnership.
Yesterday, the Emir met at his residence several Arab-Americans working in the fields of American-Islamic relations, human rights, medicine, development, economics and international politics.
The Emir praised their efforts in all areas. Discussions during the meeting dealt with the work and achievements of Arab intellectuals in the West, which help build bridges between nations. The role played by these figures as representatives of the Arab and Islamic nation, with a view to bringing closer the intellectual and cultural visions of the East and the West, was also discussed.
The meeting was attended by members of the official delegation accompanying the Emir.
