High-level participation expected for Doha’s UN meet on poor countries

Doha: Executive Director of the Permanent Committee for Organizing Conferences (PCOC) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs H E Mubarak Ajlan Al Kuwari affirmed that the Fifth UN Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC5), which will be hosted by the State of Qatar from March 5 to 9, will have wide international participation at the highest levels.

In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Al Kuwari said that the expected number of participants in the conference ranges from 4,000 to 5,000 from outside the country and 1,000 from within.

He explained that it has been confirmed the presence of a large number of heads of states and governments and their deputies, in addition to a number of foreign ministers and high-ranking officials. He pointed out that the participation of this large number indicates the importance of the event and will certainly contribute to the success of the conference and demonstrate Qatar’s high capabilities in hosting important international events.

The PCOC Executive Director said that the State of Qatar has made all necessary arrangements for the success of the conference in coordination with the United Nations, including facilitating entry procedures for all guests, participants and journalists.

Al Kuwari said that the State of Qatar hopes the conference will contribute to finding absolute solutions and coming up with recommendations that contribute to the acceleration of development and prosperity in the least developed countries, stressing that the State of Qatar harnesses all its diplomatic, logistical and development capabilities to achieve this goal.
