SpaceX capsule leaves ISS after three-week stay

WASHINGTON: An unmanned, privately-owned US space capsule which delivered supplies to the International Space Station undocked from the orbiting outpost yesterday and started heading home, NASA said.

SpaceX’s Dragon capsule was de-linked from the ISS by crew using a robotic arm, ending a mission of just over three weeks. At the point of disengagement, the capsule was 344 kilometers over southern Australia.

Dragon delivered 544 kilos of food, scientific material and other equipment during SpaceX’s second resupply mission to the space station, which currently has a crew of two Americans, three Russians and a Canadian.

Once it was far enough away from the ISS, Dragon was to fire up its orbital engines for about 10 minutes.

The capsule is returning to Earth much heavier than on its outbound journey, as it will be carrying more than 2,600 pounds of equipment from experiments conducted on the ISS. AFP
