DOHA: The Arab League has urged the international community to provide recognition to Syria’s opposition National Coalition and back the Syrian rebels in their fight against the repressive regime.
The leaders of the Arab world at the close of a summit here yesterday said in a joint declaration that the member-states of the Arab League had the right to provide military support to Syrians fighting the regime. The two-day summit that began yesterday ended a day ahead of schedule, with the leaders calling for convening a UN-sponsored international conference to support rebuilding effort in Syria. The declaration was read by the Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed bin Halli.
The declaration said that by allotting Syria’s seat to the National Coalition, the League had made the Coalition operational. The Peninsula
The Arab leaders said the coalition is the legitimate representative of the Syrian people and had the right to hold meetings and pave the way for elections in their country to elect and install a government.
The declaration also talked in no uncertain terms of Israel leaving the Palestinian and Arab territories and decided to set up a Qatar-sponsored $1bn fund to save the Arab character of Jerusalem.
