Doha: The Supreme Education Council’s Higher Education Institute (HEI) faces a number of challenges while processing international scholarship funds for Qatari students, according to a senior official.

The availability of dual funds for students, low Grade Point Average (GPA), as well as a general lack of awareness about the required criteria for admission in universities abroad are among the common issues, Alawi Bailqees Al Yafei, Director of US and Canada scholarship programme at HEI, recently said.

Speaking at the Education Fair, Al Yafei said that some students register with universities without even realising that the courses will be taught online.

Delay in the results of students, and changing university or the field of study at the last moment were some other problems faced by the institute while processing scholarships for Qatari students.

The HEI’s scholarship office is responsible for administering scholarship programmes for gradate and post-graduate studies in Qatar and abroad, with some 675 universities accredited with the institute. “We face a number of challenges when sending students for scholarships such as duality of funds, delay in the results of students, changing the students university or the field of study, or sometimes incomplete criteria,” Al Yafei said.

There are some of the students that register with universities without completing required credit hours while others have less than 2 GPA, he said.

In order to tackle some of these problems, the HEI organizes orientations and seminars for students. The Peninsula
