DOHA: Algeria and Austria will battle for a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stages when they meet in their final Group J fixture tomorrow at Kansas City Stadium.

The match, scheduled for 5:00am (Qatar time), is expected to play a pivotal role in determining the final standings in a competitive group that also features Argentina and Jordan.

Both teams enter the encounter level on three points after recording one win and one defeat from their opening two matches. Algeria boosted their qualification hopes with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Jordan on Monday, while Austria suffered a 2-0 defeat against reigning champions Argentina.

With both sides still firmly in contention for a place in the next round, neither team is prepared to settle for anything less than a strong performance in what promises to be a tense and closely fought contest.

Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic insisted his side will approach the match with a winning mentality despite the high stakes.

“There is no ‘if’ or ‘but’ in football, we have to face our opponents always the same way, with a strong desire to perform well and a great will to win,” Petkovic said.

The Algerian coach dismissed any suggestion that teams should concern themselves with potential knockout-stage opponents, stressing that qualification must first be earned on the pitch.

“We will see what happens after the match, but we have to do our best in order to promote our ambitions and try to win the match,” he added.

Petkovic’s confidence has been strengthened by Algeria’s performance against Jordan, a result that kept their World Cup hopes firmly in their own hands.

“I think ultimately we’ve produced two good performances. We deserve to win this game, and it certainly gives us a lot of confidence and belief ahead of our next match,” he said following the victory.

“What mattered for us was to win this match, to stay in the hunt, to make it through to the knockout stage, and ultimately to have our fate in our own hands.”

Austria, meanwhile, know a positive result could also secure their passage to the next stage despite the setback against Argentina.

Head coach Ralf Rangnick was quick to reject any discussion about playing cautiously or settling for a particular outcome.

“No, definitely not,” Rangnick said when asked if Austria might prefer to lose or manipulate the result.

“If we have a draw tomorrow, we can go on, but we cannot go into a match and just say, ‘We’ll play for a draw.’”

Austria midfielder Konrad Laimer echoed his coach’s determination, insisting the team’s focus remains solely on winning.

“We go out, we want to win the game. It doesn’t matter who we face,” Laimer said.

“We want to come through the group stage, and then it doesn’t matter for me who we face.”
