DOHA: The first edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) in Qatar will go a long way in boosting the game in the country, a Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) official said yesterday.
Pakistan yesterday announced it will host it’s Twenty20 league in Doha next year.
“This is a very important development. I am sure when we stage the Pakistan Super League, the popularity of this event will overall boost the development of the game in Qatar,” Issa Ali Ghanem of QOC said yesterday. “It will actually improve cricket in this country. As you know, cricket is hugely popular among the Asian communities in Qatar. We know Qatar aspires to host and promote every sport.
“We are steadily progressing towards hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Before we do that, we will continue to bring top class sports events to Qatar.
“We want every sport getting the right kind of boost in Qatar. PSL will provide a big boost to the development of cricket. Previously cricket was being staged in the UAE but PSL in Doha will take cricket to the next level when it is staged here,” he said.
“Pakistan (cricket authorities) want to bring PSL here and we are ready to provide them both of our stadiums. We have one venue in Mesaeeid also. And then we have the main stadium in Industrial Area. It needs a few upgrades but we will easily manage that,” he said.
