LAUSANNE: Qatar’s gravity defying high jumper and 2016-Rio Games silver medallist Mutaz Essa Barshim cleared 2.35 metres to win the gold at Lausanne IAAF Diamond League on Thursday afternoon.
Mutaz, the bronze medallist at the 2012 London Games, managed to win the country’s first-ever silver medal at Olympics in Rio earlier this month and continued his magnificent form at the Swiss city with terrific performances.
“Thanks Lausanne! The crowd support was amazing!,” the Qatari champion tweeted after his memorable victory.
Britian’s Robert Grabarz finished second while Erik Kynard of the US booked the third spot on the podium.
The bronze medallist at Rio Olympics, Bogdan Bondarenko of Ukraine had to be satisfied with a fourth-place finish.
The energy-filled contest was  regarded as a re-match between Olympians Mutaz and Bondarenko, but it was Barshim who carried away all the honours.
