Geneva: Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah participated in a high-level panel discussion during the sessions of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, on the relationship between democracy and the fight against racism.

During her remarks, she emphasised that each country has its own specificities and circumstances in practicing democracy, noting that the paths of democratic transition may face challenges or require time.

At the same time, she stressed the need to adhere to the fundamental principles of respecting human dignity and preserving freedoms, along with working to strengthen institutions of community participation.

She noted the NHRC’s belief that democracy is incomplete unless it is based on equality and justice, provides all members of society with the opportunity to participate effectively without discrimination or exclusion, and has always sought to embrace diversity and ensure the representation of all.

She also affirmed the Committee’s commitment to supporting steps that promote dialogue and understanding, consolidate a culture of rights and citizenship, and oppose any practices that could lead to discrimination or exclusion on any basis.  She expressed hope that this session would provide an opportunity to exchange experiences and lessons, and to emphasize that true democracy cannot be separated from respect for human rights and the fight against all forms of racism.
