Emir meets UN officials

New York: The Emir H H  Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met yesterday many top officials at the seat of the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations in New York. Emir is here to attend the ongoing 68th session of the UN General Assembly.

The Emir received the president of the previous UN session Vuk Jeremic and thanked for his efforts during his presidency of the UN General Assembly’s 67th session and wished him success in his future tasks. 

For his part, Jeremic expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the Emir for Qatar’s attitudes supporting international efforts to achieve peace and security in the world. 

The Emir also held talks withwith UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, the Co-Chair of the Qatari-American caucus Michael Grimm, the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Yury Fedotov. 

The Emir received the Joint Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi. 

They reviewed the current situation in Syria and the solutions to stop bloodletting there and how to protect the state institutions against collapse as well as the role required on part of the friends of Syria to support the Syrian people.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s Permanent Delegation in Geneva in cooperation with the Permanent Missions of France, Germany, Turkey, UK and US organised a meeting under the title ‘Syria: Human Rights and Humanitarian Tragedy’ on the sidelines of the 24th session of the Human Rights Council. 

Keynote speakers were Director and Founder of the Syrian Network for Human Rights Fadel Abdulghani, Leader of the Syrian National Coalition’s Assistance Coordination Unit Suheir Al Atassi and Executive Director of the Syrian Center for Political and Strategic Studies Dr. Radwan Ziadeh.
