MANILA: A new low-pressure area off Oriental Mindoro will continue to bring rains over some parts of Luzon and the Visayas over the next three days, the state weather bureau said yesterday.
Rene Paciente, weather forecasting section chief of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), said the low-pressure area was spotted at 240 kilometres west of Oriental Mindoro at 4pm yesterday. He said the low-pressure area is likely to intensify into a tropical depression within the next 24 to 36 hours.
Should it become a depression while inside the Philippine area of responsibility, the disturbance will be given the local name Paolo.
Paciente said the low-pressure area and the southwest monsoon will bring cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms over the western section of southern Luzon and western Visayas.
Light to moderate rains will also persist over Metro Manila, as well as in the western section of central, northern and southern Luzon, in the next two to three days, he said. The southwest monsoon, enhanced by a tropical storm with international name Pabuk, dumped heavy rains over several parts of Luzon including Metro Manila last Monday, triggering floods and landslides.
Moderate to occasionally heavy rains, meanwhile, will prevail over Mindoro provinces and northern Palawan, including Coron island, and may trigger flashfloods and landslides. Paciente, however, said the new weather disturbance was not expected to make landfall in any part of the country.
