DOHA: The Indian Embassy organised its monthly open house yesterday, in which officials met complainants, discussed their problems and assured them that the mission would follow up their cases with Qatari authorities.
The embassy has issued 28 Emergency Certificates (ECs) this month at the request of Qatari authorities for travel documents for detainees in the Deportation Centre.
The embassy facilitated the return to India of 64 Indian citizens from the Deportation Centre during September 2014. It also issued two air tickets to Indian nationals in distress.
The embassy registered 26 deaths in August 2014 and 17 deaths until September 24, while the total number of deaths registered so far this year is 204.
Kareem Abdullah, President of the Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF), functioning under the aegis of the Embassy for the welfare of Indian workers, attended the Open House. Ambassador Sanjiv Arora was also present.
The embassy said that its officials regularly visit the Central Prison and the Deportation Centre to enquire about the welfare of detainees from India. There are 85 Indian nationals in the Central Prison and 143 in the Deportation Centre.
The Forum is helping Indian workers through various welfare measures, including provision of air tickets, financial assistance and medical help. Among other assistance, it provided six air tickets to Indian nationals in September 2014.THE PENINSULA
