New York: Qatar has participated in the high-level meeting of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Group of Friends.
The event took place on the margin of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Representing Qatar at the meeting was Director of the International Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H E Sheikha Hanouf bint Abdulrahman Al-Thani.
She affirmed Qatar’s continued support for the Alliance and its role in promoting dialogue, understanding, and reciprocal respect, particularly amid the rising prevalence of hate speech, racism, Islamophobia and other forms of intolerance around the world.
Sheikha Hanouf also reiterated Qatar’s support for UN General Assembly Resolution 76/254, which designated March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, stressing the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation to address hate speech and intolerance, including by harnessing the digital space and ensuring that technology is used to promote rapprochement rather than deepen divisions.
Dialogue and sustainable development are closely interconnected, she noted, stressing the importance of investing in education, the youth, as well as in economic and social opportunities as to build more peaceful and resilient societies.
