ISLAMABAD: A proposal for tabling the 21st Amendment to Pakistan’s Constitution is being considered to give greater purpose and meaning to the role of the Parliamentary Committee for Judges Appointment. The political parties having representation in parliament agree that the committee for appointment of judges of the superior judiciary cannot effectively work in its present role and it should either be abolished or its role be made more effective through a constitutional amendment. In a meeting of the committee yesterday, the proposal was discussed. A sub-committee headed by former federal law minister Farooq H Naek is working on enhancing the role of the parliamentary committee and its recommendations are being finalised. However, Naek wondered if the parliamentary committee should be empowered or abolished.
Gilani put on exit control list
ISLAMABAD: The government has placed former prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani on the exit control list (ECL) over his alleged involvement in Rs100bn Ogra scam, a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) spokesman confirmed yesterday. Sources said Gilani is likely to be arrested in the first week of November when NAB would file the final Ogra reference with the accountability court. Contacted, NAB spokesman Ramazan Sajid confirmed that Gilani’s name has been placed on ECL on the bureau’s request, but refused to comment on the prospects of his arrest. Sajid said NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry has directed the bureau to expedite work on pending cases, including the Ogra scam. “The chairman wants to take all cases to their logical end in accordance with the principles of accountability and strict merit.” Sources said the Ministry of Interior was reluctant to put Gilani on ECL.
