SEOUL: The official campaign period for the South Korea's 18th presidential election began on Tuesday for a 22-day run.

Candidate registration turned up seven presidential contenders, including Park Geun-hye of the ruling Saenuri Party, Moon Jae-in of the main opposition Democratic United Party and Lee Jung-hee of the minor opposition Unified Progressive Party. Independent candidates Park Jong-seon, Kim So-yeon, Kang Ji-won and Kim Soon-ja also joined the race.

Now that the official campaign period is under way, the National Election Commission will step up measures to crack down on election law violations, according to Korea's (KBS WORLD) website.

Candidates will be allowed to post only one placard per town and will not be allowed to include any other figures on their posters, which can be legally displayed from Friday.

Campaigning can be done through the use of the Internet, e-mail, text messaging and SNS, but the distribution of false information or slander will be prohibited. (QNA)
