DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) continues to provide relief services to the population of northern Mali suffering the effects of the current crisis.

QRC is providing emergency relief, particularly in the areas of health, food security, water and sanitation.

The conflict has been raging for eight months, with large numbers of people being displaced to neighbouring countries.

In December 2012, a QRC team did a field visit to the province of Gao to oversee the distribution of 1,200 food baskets to families, containing 75kg of food per family (rice, oil, wheat flour, dates and sugar) in several villages in Purim and Gao.

Earlier in the year QRC distributed 1,000 food baskets in Gao and 100 other baskets containing food, cleaning equipment and clothes for refugees in the Niger Manguiza camp.

In the field of healthcare QRC has a comprehensive programme for relief in the north which includes the rehabilitation of health buildings and the provision of medicines and medical disposables, as well as providing office furniture, electrical appliances and medical services.

QRC has completed reconstructing the Gao hospital building.

The hospital received 732 children in December 2012, with a total of 38 surgical interventions carried out, and 465 medical tests were performed by QRC’s General Practitioner in the hospital in the same month.
