Deadly Ebola virus spreads

CONAKRY: A deadly outbreak of the Ebola virus suspected of killing at least 63 people has spread from rural Guinea to the capital Conakry, authorities said yesterday, after West African nations branded the virus a serious threat to regional security. Guinean Health Minister Remy Lamah said that four cases of the haemorrhagic fever — one of the most lethal infectious diseases known to man — had been confirmed in the capital and the victims had been placed in quarantine. 
Montana bride gets 30-year jail
MISSOULA: A Montana bride who shoved her husband off a cliff at Glacier National Park was sentenced to 30 years in prison with no chance for early parole, followed by five years of supervised release, yesterday after a federal judge denied her request to withdraw her guilty plea to a charge of second-degree murder. Graham has admitted in court to pushing her husband of eight days off the edge of a cliff last July. 
90 still missing in US mudslide
ARLINGTON: The number of people missing after a landslide sent a wall of mud crashing into dozens of rural Washington state homes dropped to 90, as officials reported finding more bodies  but acknowledged some victims’ remains may never be recovered. Four days after a rain-soaked hillside collapsed near the tiny town of Oso, a fire official said the death toll had risen to 25 people.
Plane forced to abandon take-off
LONDON: Four passengers were injured after a Swiss airlines plane had to abandon take-off because of an engine failure at London’s City Airport yesterday. The flight, which was carrying 74 passengers and four crew, was due to travel to Geneva.  
Ex-CIA chief dies

WASHINGTON: James Schlesinger, who served three US presidents, Republican and Democrat alike, in the top posts at the Central Intelligence Agency, Pentagon and Energy Department in the 1970s, died yesterday at age 85. Schlesinger headed the CIA and the Defence Department under Republicans and then, as its first chief, established the Energy Department from scratch under Democrat Jimmy Carter.  He died at a hospital in Baltimore.
