DOHA: Some 279 Indians died in Qatar in 2014, while the death toll in the community was 241 in the previous year and 237 in 2012, show figures cited by the Indian embassy.
The embassy didn’t give the causes of death as to how may were natural and how many due to other reasons such as heart failure and road accidents.
Until March 26 this year, the deaths registered with the mission totalled 25.
The embassy said in a statement after an ‘open house’ yesterday that it registered 3,943 complaints by workers last year.
There were 3,558 grievances in 2013 and 3,385 in 2012. The embassy didn’t shed light on the nature of complaints.
It said the labour and community welfare section has received 955 complaints so far this year.
There were 92 Indians in the central prison and 144 at the deportation centre until last week. An embassy team visited the prison and the centre last week to enquire their welfare.
R K Singh, Charge d’Affaires, chaired the open forum and heard the woes of distressed Indians. Arvind Patil, Head, Indian Community Welfare Forum, was present. Based on requests from Qatari authorities, the embassy said it issued 13 emergency documents and 10 air tickets to needy Indians so far this month.
