DOHA: The surplus foods saving team, the arm of Eid Charity, distributed cooked food and ration packets to 6,000 expat labourers at Industrial Area recently, some of them hapless workers whose employers have fled the country.

“We distribute food to some workers whose employers (owners of the companies) fled Qatar, leaving behind hundreds of labourers, the Director of Social Center at Eid Charity, Abdullah Al Kaabi, told Al Arab. “Cases are in the courts, the team is providing them with food until their cases are settled,” he added

The team distributes iftar meals to 2,400 domestic workers in collaboration with manpower agencies during Ramadan.

“The team has been assigned to find out the whereabouts of these needy people (domestic help) to provide them with food.”

Since the beginning of Ramadan, the team has distributed ration packet to 24,000 families.

The packets include meat, rice, edible oil, milk, macrona and sugar, among others.

The 24-member team also distributes iftar meals at Ramadan tents — Tamim Al Dari with the capacity of 400 people, Al Shafi tent (300), Ahmed Al Muraikhi (200), said Al Kaabi.

“We distribute not only cooked food. Some people donate ration to poor families and workers.

“We distribute ration packets every Thursday and last Thursday packets were distributed to 270 needy families,” he added.

“The food saving project is very helpful for me and my family,” said Abu Ziyad, who is the sole breadwinner for a six-member family.

“I had difficulty providing ration to my family, my children are going to school and after paying school fees and rent there is hardly anything left to meet other expenses,” he added.
