DOHA: The two warehouses in the Industrial Area that were gutted in a devastating fire (pictured) late on Friday evening belonged to Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), and HMC has clarified that no chemical substances were stored there.
“Only used materials like furniture and stationery were stocked there when the fire broke out,” local Arabic daily Al Watan reported yesterday quoting HMC sources.
The cause of the fire could not be ascertained and no injuries or deaths occurred.
There was no one in the ill-fated warehouses at the time of the incident.
The security guards were positioned outside the buildings, HMC said. “There were no materials related to medicine. There were no chemicals stored inside,” HMC reiterated.
The Ministry of Interior said on its Twitter account yesterday that the fire was controlled and not allowed to spread. There were no casualties. The ministry has urged people not to lend ears to rumours. The Peninsula
Meanwhile, reports of the fire have raised concerns in the Qatari community in particular as evidenced from people’s reaction on local social networking sites.
With so many fire incidents taking place in the country there is the need to review national fire safety policy, especially in the Industrial Area, said a commentator.
Nobody knows if the fires are being caused by the hot weather or electrical wires, said another commentator.
Yet another said the Industrial Area was like a huge cluster of slums. Live electrical wires can be seen hanging in the area, and in garages, here and there, said still another commentator.
There is no official supervision in the Industrial Area, rued still another commentator. The Peninsula
