MANILA: President Benigno Aquino III will visit South Korea on October 17-18 to meet his counterpart Park Geun-hye, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced yesterday.
The state visit will include discussions on bilateral issues including political, defence, economic and development cooperation, and regional and international challenges, DFA said.
The state agency added that Aquino will also visit the Korean business community to promote trade and investment in the Philippines and interact with the Filipino community in the capital Seoul.
“The Philippines and Republic of Korea established relations on March 3, 1949. During the Korean War in 1950, the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea joined the UN-led coalition in defending the freedom of the Korean people.
Rebels bid for highway foiled
NORTH COTABATO: Government forces foiled early yesterday an attempt by members of the outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) to occupy a stretch of the national highway in M’lang town.
Members of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division drove the estimated 80 armed bandits away when they tried to assemble at the boundary of barangays Tibao and Dalapitan in Matalam, North Cotabato.
No one was reported killed or wounded in the clash, but the incident caused panic among residents.
