Huge marijuana haul at airport

DOHA: Customs authorities at Hamad International Airport have foiled an attempt to smuggle 17 kilogramme of marijuana by a passenger coming from one of the Asian countries on board a direct flight to Doha.
Khalid Hamad Rashed Al Kaabi, Director of International Airport Customs Department said customs officers monitoring X-ray detectors became suspicious and inspected a bag. They found three large parcels of marijuana during the inspection.
He said smugglers and the seized parcels were handed over to security organisations who will complete legal procedures and investigations prior to referring them to the attorney general’s office. Al Kaabi explained that the Customs Authority in the past has made big hauls of banned substances like hush, narcotic pills, opium, cocaine hidden in unexpected places.
The General Authority of Customs has made 1,500 seizures in 2013. The seizures include 282 narcotic substances, 102 narcotic pills, 80 tobacco products, 162 seizures pertaining to intellectual property rights, 19 weapons and ammunition, in addition to 689 commercial fraud and other seizures related to pornographic materials, the smuggling of endangered species of animals and other banned materials.
