DOHA: A Qatari charity has come forward to support the establishment of a technical training centre in the Indian state of Maharashtra, catering to the poor and needy segments of society.
The Jassim and Hamed Bin Jassim Charitable Foundation has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an Indian charitable trust based in the state to establish the facility.
The proposed Hamad Bin Jassim Industrial Training Centre will cost an estimated QR3m (about $822,000) and be built in Dabhol in the Konkan area.
It aims to provide technical education to poor students and school dropouts and help create job opportunities.
The MoU was signed by Saeed Mudakar Al Hajri, CEO of Jassim and Hamed Bin Jassim Charitable Foundation, and Hassan Chougule, Chairman of Konkan Sarvangin Utkarsh Mandal, a social uplift centre.
The centre will be built on an area of 5,500 square meters.
In the initial phase, it will have six main sections, including electrical, mechanical, welding, plumbing and shipbuilding.
The centre with a capacity of 300 students per year is expected to start operation by mid-2015. It will cater to mainly Muslim students, especially orphans and poor, said Chougule.
The graduates will obtain accredited certificates so that they can take up jobs in India and abroad, he added.
The centre is part of the educational programmes of the charity is implementing worldwide.
About other projects being financed by the charity, Al Hajari said the first phase of the Sheikh Jassim Model City in Sri Lanka is ready and will be opened next month and more than 60 percent of the Sheikh Jassim Hospital in Comoros has been completed.
