Washington: The US announced Thursday the resumption of food aid distribution in Somalia following the demolition of a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse it funds in the port of Mogadishu.
The US State Department said on its official X account that the US will "resume WFP food distribution while continuing to review our broader assistance posture in Somalia," noting that the Trump administration has adopted a strict policy of zero tolerance for any waste of the country's resources.
Washington had suspended its aid to Somalia in early January after the demolition of the food warehouse and the loss of some food supplies.
However, the Mogadishu government confirmed that the demolition was part of expansion and rehabilitation work at the port, and that all WFP supplies affected by the expansion were still available. Furthermore, the government stated that it had provided the UN program with a larger and more suitable warehouse within the port of Mogadishu.
