We can rise after stumbling for a decade: Aquino

MANILA: It is not impossible to rise from almost a decade of stumbling along.

This was the Lenten message of President Aquino to Filipinos during the Holy Week break, reminding them to give even a little of themselves to others and help the Philippines achieve progress.

“It is not impossible to envision progress, especially for our fellow Filipinos who are in greatest need. With guidance and direction from Christ, we were able to show the effectiveness of focusing not on selfish interests but on the welfare of the people,” the President said in Filipino. Aquino also said Filipinos should remember and emulate the generosity and humility of Jesus Christ.

“He became an example of generosity and love for others. As followers of Christ, it is but right to follow his good example,” Aquino said.

The President said nothing could compare to the sacrifices made by Christ, including offering His own life, and that if things were to be summed up, He was asking for too little from the people: “To love and take care of others. Can we bear to deprive Him of this?” As a nation, the President said the Philippines had proven so much for being united in charitable works and concern for others.

“This Holy Week, we are again reminded of the importance of serving as a light to each other, and the brightness that it can bring to the whole nation. The step we have taken has been good and this Lenten season, may we continue to reflect on how we can nurture the seeds of brotherhood sowed by the Lord God,” Aquino said, as he wished everyone a meaningful and peaceful Lenten break.
