Doha, Qatar: Qatar joined the world yesterday marking the ‘Earth Hour’ a global environmental initiative aimed at raising awareness of the importance of preserving natural resources through simple yet impactful actions.

Several iconic buildings in Doha joined the cause turning off unnecessary lighting for 60 minutes as a symbolic commitment to sustainable practices.

Government entities, including the Ministry of Municipality and the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), joined popular hotels, several prominent buildings along the Doha skyline, and the Museum of Islamic Art in switching off unnecessary lights in observance of Earth Hour. The coordinated effort highlighted a shared commitment across public and private sectors to promote energy conservation and raise awareness about environmental sustainability.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change participated yesterday in Earth Hour by switching off the lights in its main building (Al-Adeed Tower) and all its affiliated buildings.

Early yesterday, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change urged people and organisations to take part in Earth Hour by turning off lights and non-essential devices between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

In a statement posted on its official account on the X platform the Ministry underscored the important  role of both individuals and organisations in protecting the environment and advancing sustainability. It stressed that adopting responsible environmental practices and conserving energy are key to mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change.

The Ministry noted that Earth Hour is a global environmental initiative aimed at raising awareness of the importance of preserving natural resources through simple yet impactful actions, including turning off unnecessary lighting for 60 minutes as a symbolic commitment to sustainable practices.

The Ministry further highlighted Qatar’s participation shows its commitment to global climate efforts and environmental awareness.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) International launched “Earth Hour” as a global initiative encouraging people to switch off non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change and biodiversity loss.
