ISLAMABAD: The Establishment Division, which oversees matters related to the higher bureaucracy in Pakistan, has sought extension of the mandatory tenure of senior officials in Balochistan from two to three years, sources say.
The move is said to have left government officers, especially those belonging to the Police Service of Pakistan group, unhappy because they often find it difficult to get themselves transferred to other provinces even after completing the mandatory period in restive Balochistan.
In September 2012, the then PPP government made it mandatory for officers to serve at least three years in Balochistan. Most officials were not willing to serve in the province because of the poor law and order situation there.
The decision was changed by the caretaker government when the tenure for federal government officials in Balochistan was reduced to two years.
When contacted, the prime minister’s spokesman, Mohiuddin Wani, said he was not aware of any decision on the summary, but the mandatory period stood at two years now.
“The government is paying no heed to the miseries of police officials from Punjab who are being attacked in Balochistan,” a senior police officer said.
