QP holds ‘Mental Health at Work’ programmes

Doha: Qatar Petroleum (QP) was selected for a pilot training programme to raise awareness among employees about Mental Health at Work. This training program was organized by the Academic Health System (AHS) in conjunction with HMC Psychiatry Department and The Supreme Council of Health. The initiative is in support of the Qatar National Mental Health Strategy priority for increasing awareness about mental health issues in the workplace.
One in five people have a mental health condition, knowing the signs and symptoms can help recovery. The main objectives of the training program was to provide information about mental health issues, to educate the participants on measures to reduce stress at work, and to explain when to seek professional help for mental health issues. Attendees learned how to identify the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions as well as how to provide support for colleagues experiencing mental health issues.
Three one-day training sessions were conducted on April 8, 10 and 14 and up to 25 QP employees participated in each session. The programme was held at the corporation’s Centre for Health & Wellness in Doha and the event was attended by staff from QP’s Medical Services Department, Administration Directorate and Industrial Cities Directorate. . Ahmad Ali Al Mawlawi, Director Administration, along with his directorate managers have attended one of the training sessions.
The training programme  was conducted by Sally Coates, an experienced mental health practitioner and training facilitator. Sally was the Education and Training Manager for the award-winning beyondblue initiative, which is the national mental health programme of Australia and has delivered awareness training to over 50,000 employees in over 500 professions and industries.
