Cairo: Qatar affirmed yesterday its commitment to boost regional and international efforts to achieve the third Millennium Development Goals and realise the tangible progress in various political, economical and social aspects.

Qatar participated in the third session of the Arab Social Affairs Ministers Council, held here under the chairmanship of Yemen.

Abdullah Mohammad Ajaj Al Kubaisi, Social Affairs Assistant Undersecretary for Housing Affairs, led Qatar’s delegation.

Qatar is a pioneering country in achieving the Millennium Development Goals, Al Kubaisi told Qatar News Agency (QNA) at the conclusion of the session.

The meeting discussed a proposal related to Arab report on the Millennium Development Goals, expected to be submitted to the United Nations by the end of this year, Al Kubaisi added.

He pointed out that there are about eight development goals relating to education, empowerment of women, the reproductive health and the activation of the youths’ political participation as well as other goals that had been achieved by Qatar.

Qatar has managed to achieve comprehensive development through the eradication of poverty, hunger, expansion of primary education and the enactment of a compulsory education law, Al Kubaisi said.

He emphasised that Qatar has raised women’s status politically, economically and socially.

He said the country also works to improve maternal health, reduce the mortality rate, expand the establishment of new hospitals and intensify efforts to combat HIV virus.

In the area of environmental care, Qatar has established a specialised ministry for environment which has contributed to the establishment of an international network for environment care, he added.

“Under the wise leadership of the Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, we hope to realise further development and benefit from regional and international experiences in achieving the desired progress,” Al Kubaisi added.
