Washington: Meta Platforms has introduced voice and video calling on WhatsApp Web, allowing users to make and receive calls directly through a web browser without downloading the desktop app. The update is part of a broader rollout of new calling features aimed at improving cross-device communication.
Previously limited to messaging and file sharing, WhatsApp Web now supports one-to-one and group voice and video calls with end-to-end encryption, no time limits and no additional cost. The browser version also includes screen sharing, reactions and a dedicated Calls tab with access to call history and favorite contacts.
Meta said the new browser-based calling feature is designed for users who rely on shared or work computers where installing applications may not be possible, while bringing WhatsApp Web closer to dedicated video conferencing platforms. Group calls can include up to 32 participants.
The company also introduced Call Transfer, enabling users to move an active call between a phone, desktop and web browser without disconnecting. Other additions include a Waiting Room that lets hosts approve participants joining calls through invite links, QuickHD for faster high-definition video at the start of calls, and noise suppression to reduce background sounds.
Meta said the new calling features are being rolled out gradually to WhatsApp users worldwide.
