DOHA: A Sri Lankan who stumbled upon QR90,000 in the parking lot of a shopping complex and handed it to the security personnel of the facility to be given back to its owner, has been honoured by police.

The Ministry of Interior said on its Twitter and Facebook accounts that Mohamed Nebras was felicitated by the Director of the Capital Security Department for his integrity and honesty.

The ministry posted a photograph that showed the Director, Brigadier Nasser Jabr Al Nuaimi, honouring Nebras.

No details were given as to when and where the incident took place, how Nebras found the cash and where he worked and in what position. The news, however, went viral on social networking sites in the Sri Lankan community in Qatar, with many showering praise on him saying he had done them proud.

In Sri Lanka, QR90,000 ($24,715) is huge money (Sri Lankan rupees 33,00,000) and can even buy one a small home. Nebras is indeed a man of exemplary character and honesty, said compatriots.

In no time, over 700 Sri Lankans had shared the news on Facebook and Twitter, saying ‘Proud to be a Sri Lankan’ as soon as it was released by the ministry.

One commentator, lauding Nebras, said: “Great gesture, honesty will be rewarded well,”, while another said: “Proud to be a Sri Lankan; hats off to you”.  The Peninsula
