DOHA: The group of Qatari inventors and scientists wanted to recycle computers dumped by companies and homes into useful “green computers” for the less privileged people.
The group belonging to Qatar Scientific Club (QSC) is actively collaborating with the other big institutions to bring back to life ramshackle PCs from the junkyards which could useful once again for the poor people here and outside the country.
Organisers said the bottomline of such initiative is not just about supporting poor people to give them access to technology but more significantly on QSC’s contribution to recycle waste to help in their small way their care for the environment in the midst of the threats of global warming.
Hassan Abdulla Al Abdullah, Secretary General of QSC who heads the “green computer” project, said they decided to deal the issue of electronic waste by repairing old PCs that has been one of the causes of environmental damage in Qatar. Abdullah said there are about 500 poor people who benefited from the project.
The project was started four years ago and QSC felt there is a need to revive it back with Microsoft as major partner and the support of other institutions like Commercialbank, Ministry of Interior, Qafco, Qapco and Public Works Authority.
Commercialbank has extended QR200,000 financial support to sustain the project and all other related activities. QSC is also bent on conducting a training course on PC maintenance to beneficiaries of the project. Other QSC officials involved in the project are Eng Mohammad Halwan Al Saqtari from Qtel and Eng Fahad Rashid Al Obayed who will be in-charge of training and development.
