DOHA: The Ministry of Labour is stepping up efforts to reduce the rate of workplace accidents and injuries through awareness campaigns on occupational health and safety to be waged by mandoobs (company representatives mainly doing immigration liaising jobs) of private companies.
In line with this, the Labour Ministry has called on concerned companies to comply with occupational health and safety requirements saying violations are subject to sanctions which could lead to cancellation of license and blacklisting the company.
Occupational health and safety requirements are not only limited to work sites but extend to workers’ accommodations as well, according to the Ministry. The said awareness drive, held in collaboration with the National Committee for Occupational Safety and Health and other concerned companies, targets different sectors in the country. It is aimed at introducing occupational health, safety and security conditions in order to protect workers from accidents and injuries.
The meetings have been met with much enthusiasm by mandoobs who showed keenness of attending to know the principles and ways to introduce safety to workers in their respective companies.
The occupational health and safety department at the Labour Ministry has trained inspectors to conduct regular and surprise visits as well as organize awareness campaigns through various means including the media for companies to provide all necessary equipment and protective clothes to protect the workers and the environment from pollution.
With the many construction projects expected to start in the coming months, the Ministry is stepping up efforts to conduct stringent inspections.
