Doha: Qatar University’s (QU) College of Medicine and College of Engineering collaborated in organising the first Artificial intelligence in Medicine Students Journal Club titled “Machine learning in medicine.”

The virtual event was attended by around 60 students from the QU Health cluster, Computer Sciences, and Engineering students and faculty.

Three medical students presented the event, Lubna Zar, “AI determines sex from images of the eye”; Salma Hijazi, “Screening for cardiac contractile dysfunction using an AI-enabled electrocardiogram”; and Reem Alsubai, “Artificial intelligence in musculoskeletal imaging: current status and future direction.”

Each student presented for 10 to 15 minutes before an open discussion with the attendees and faculty. Faculty mentors of the club are from CMED and CENG, including Prof Sumaya Al Maadeed (CENG), Dr. Muhammad Chowdhury (CENG), Dr. Susu Zughaier (CMED), and with the collaboration of Dr. Ali Ait Hussain from HMC. The student leader of the Machine Learning and Virtual reality (ML/VR) interest group is medical student Yosra Mekki. The event's objective was to introduce AI to Medicine Students Journal Club and Medicine Faculty mentors to learn about machine learning applications in medicine, stimulate interdisciplinary research and collaborations between QU Health cluster colleges and Computer Sciences and Engineering College.

Artificial intelligence in medical applications is expected to revolutionise healthcare delivery. For example, Machine learning (ML) and Deep Learning-based X-ray and CT-scan image analysis are implemented in radiology to assist in diagnosis. Artificial intelligence research is at the forefront of advancing the implementation of AI in Medicine. The interdisciplinary collaborative research between both colleges at QU is needed to incorporate AI in medical education, encouraging student collaboration.
