DOHA: People with diabetes or overweight are invited to an innovative community health programme being conducted by Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) in collaboration with Qatar University (QU).
It is part of a study by QU on the effectiveness of such health programmes in tackling diabetes and obesity — two most common lifestyle-related health conditions in Qatar and the Gulf.
“This is the second phase of the study and we are targeting about 400 people. However, the response is not up to our expectations and some 100 people have registered until now,” Emily Gaikowski, a researcher at QU, who is conducting the study, told this daily.
“This is a first-of-its-kind study in Qatar. It aims to study how people will lose weight and get healthier when they partner with a friend or family member. To enrol, people need to have type 2 diabetes, a body mass index of 30 or above and at least one friend, family member, neighbour, or co-worker who has a BMI of at least 25,” she added.
If eligible, participants will receive seven free health education courses and screenings, covering everything from nutrition to physical activity and medication management.
Registration closes on December 7.
Potential candidates must visit the QDA offices in Doha and undergo a screening to check eligibility.
The study will help researchers evaluate effects of the community health programme on improving clinical outcomes for weight and diabetes management among people with pre-diabetes (very high blood sugar) or type 2 diabetes.
The programme is open to people aged 18 and above who are overweight or diabetic (very high blood sugar), or pre-diabetic.
Pregnant women and those who have had bariatric surgery in the past one year or less are not qualified.
Classes and study-related tests are free. Details can be had by calling 77495122.
